A
MESSAGE FROM THE SALEM SOCIETY CHAIR
The
Salem Society of the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls
is comprised of leadership givers in our community who commit
to an annual giving level of $500 or more. Salem Society members
are recognized in several different forums and receive great
opportunities to network with other members of this prestigious
group of concerned community members. Together, we can increase
the ability of the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Fall's
to make a real difference in the lives of those in need in our
Community.
As co-chairs
we are encouraging all our members to maintain or increase their
giving and promote additional membership to friends, family
and co-workers especially with the elevated living costs and
a higher unemployment rate in our immediate area.
We ask
for your continued support so that the United Way of Naugatuck
and Beacon Falls can continue to support programs that improve
the quality of life for so many in our community. You can make
a difference.
Thank
you,
David J. Rotatori

HISTORY
The
Salem Society of United Way of Naugatuck & Beacon Falls
recognizes those individuals who make especially generous gifts.
The Society was founded in 1990 by Ron Lengyel and Jeff Witherwax,
two prominent members of our community. It was named after Naugatuck's
original name "Salem Society" from 1773. Philanthropy
was at its best then and still is now for our community of Naugatuck.
In 1774 a town committee including John Hopkins and Samuel Lewis
of Salem Society, undertook to collect contributions for the
relief of the poor in Boston. Boston had been cut off by the
port bill from food supplies that would ordinarily land in Boston.
Salem Society responded to the appeal generously. They believed
that human caring is the key to a healthy society.
Society members have a strong
desire to perpetuate the proud tradition of sharing that has
been a part of Naugatuck & Beacon Falls since the beginning.
Through their actions, members continue to demonstrate a personal
investment in our complex changing community. They understand
the art of giving and show their spirit of caring and responsibility.
The example set by these extraordinary people, in the spirit
of the original "Salem Society" will have a major
impact on the future of Naugatuck & Beacon Falls.

SHARING
THE VISION: THE SALEM LEGACY FUND
In
2001, United Way of Naugatuck & Beacon Falls was left a
very generous gift from the Estate of Mr. Gordon B. Mannweiler.
With this gift United Way established an endowment fund to support
the mission of the organization into the future. This gift to
the community will touch the lives of strangers and friends
indefinitely. His final gift to his community was just one of
many contributions he had made during his lifetime. Mr. Mannweiler
worked as chief engineer and metallurgist for the Eastern Co.
The Salem Legacy Fund is a special
fund, separate from our annual campaign, which will provide
additional support for creating solutions for today and tomorrow.
The fund will directly impact our ability to strengthen this
community.
United Way has a long and successfully
history of being a leader in providing support to numerous health
and human service agencies in our community. Through the traditional
annual campaign, the promotion of volunteerism and collaborative
efforts, our local United Way has provided an efficient and
effective way to support the less fortunate in our community.
Be integrating a dynamic endowment
program into its traditional fundraising strategy, United Way
of Naugatuck & Beacon Falls is positioning itself to confront
the pressing problems of today and the times yet to come.
You can help sustain and grow
the United Way of Naugatuck & Beacon Falls by establishing
your own permanent, designated fund through a special arrangement
between the United Way and the Connecticut Community Foundation.
